What is a Skilled Nursing Facility?

Skilled Nursing is a term used to describe specific type of care and service. Understanding the definition and why it is used is vital for anyone handling the growing demands of medical and living support needed for an individual. Skilled nursing care is a specific level of care that can only be provided by licensed nurses. Medicare will pay for skilled nursing facility services if a medical professional has determined that a person needs skilled nursing care.

Comparing Kansas Nursing Homes

Some of these ways may seem obvious such as residents receiving timely attention and proper nutrition. But there are other important aspects to consider that you may not have thought of, such as:

  • good lighting
  • sturdy furnishings
  • comfortable noise levels in the dining room & common areas
  • background checks are done on all staff
  • staff receives regular training and opportunity for continuing education

Nursing Home Checklist

There are so many little, yet important, components to making sure a nursing home is the right fit for you. The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services have devised a nursing home checklist to help you cover all bases. Use their checklist to compare potential Kansas nursing homes to make sure you are considering all the issues that are important to the care you or your loved one will need.

Here is the Skilled Nursing Facility Checklist from Medicare for you to get started. To help save you time and work, we have already entered in our facility’s skilled nursing care information on how Mount Hope Nursing Center provides for each item on Medicare’s checklist.
